‘Obani lababantu’ singer dies

Johannesburg – South African music fans are in mourning. Olpha Selepe, known as Gee Six Five, has died.

“My beloved aunt, MumNcane who many of you know as #GeeSixFive is no more. She displayed leadership throughout her life, was the epitome of fearlessness & inspired many with her single #ObaniLababantu. Mthiya, Shandu kaNdaba, Sontshikazi. #RIPGeeSixFive,” wrote her niece, Sbu Mpungose on Twitter.

The 65-year-old rose to popularity with her song ‘Obani Lababantu’.

The track quickly became a hit with social media users, who adopted the phrase. Selepe was a retired teacher, who was pursuing her doctorate in higher education.
