Al Ahly and Sundowns are set for a blockbuster meeting in the group stages of the 2021/22 CAF Champions League, and Pitso Mosimane has since reflected on the draw that took place at the CAF headquarters in Cairo, Egypt on Tuesday.
The draw saw defending champions Al Ahly placed in Group A alongside Mamelodi Sundowns and two Sudanese sides, Al Hilal and Al Merreikh.
“Yes, a very difficult one,” Mosimane commented.
“I think what will happen there is the local teams will cancel each other because it’s going to be a local derby.
“But the interesting part there is, the two top teams went to Sudan last year, and we did not win.
“So, it really shows how difficult that group is going to be.”
After two CAF Champions League titles in a row, Al Ahly now have their eyes set on a third consecutive victory to go down in history as the first team to ever achieve that feat.
It also marks the fourth consecutive time the Red Devils have drawn Mamelodi Sundowns in the league. The Brazilians knocked the Reds out in the 2019 quarter-finals, before Al Ahly took their revenge twice in a row at the same stage of the competition in 2020 and 2021.
“When I was with them (Sundowns), we always had Wydad all the time. We played Wydad eight times in a row. So, it’s interesting,” Mosimane commented.
“Let’s play Mamelodi Sundowns. Obviously, they want to beat us. But we have beaten them for the last two times, so it is OK.”
