Police van drives over dog in Elsies River: WATCH

ELSIES RIVER- A video has surfaced of a SAPS van seemingly making no attempt to avoid a dog sleeping in the road, and driving over it.

SPCA spokesperson Belinda Abraham said the incident occured on Neptune street in Elsies River.

She told News24,”The dog was taken to the Animal Anti-cruelty League (AACL) in Epping,”. “I don’t know what injuries the animal suffered at the hands of these SAPS members, but the vet ordered X-rays.”

There has been no information released whether the dog was put down or not.

The dog was brought to AACL by its owner.  Dr. Mpho Hlalele, general manager at the AACL, confirmed that the animal was brought in on Thursday, “Of course, there’s been a massive public outcry over this video, but we cannot make assumptions.”

SPCA Spokesperson Abrahams says the cops are guilty of contravening the Animal Cruelty Act on two counts – first by causing harm to an animal, and secondly by not seeking help for its injuries.

Station commander brigadier Sonjani from the Elsies River Police Station was only made of the incident on Friday, he said, ” We’re looking into the matter, and still trying to find out if this is an officer from our station,”

“Once the culprits are identified, there will certainly be disciplinary investigations and consequences.”
