Pregnant women warned against bleaching unborn babies’ skins

NAIROBI- Medical experts in Ghana have issued a warning to pregnant women who take pills to bleach their unborn babies’ skins. Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) for Ghana have warned

The BBC is reporting that their is a growing trend of using illegal bleaching pills during pregnancy which can cause defects, including damage of limbs and internal organs.

The pills are usually smuggled into the country inside a luggage bag at airports.

Airport authorities are working with Ghana Police Service and other security agencies to make arrests, prosecute companies or individuals caught selling the illegal pills.

There is a perception in parts of Africa that children who are light skin would have a better prospect in life.

The FDA revealed that their market surveillance found the practice is popular with both educated and uneducated Ghanaian Women.
