Proteas captain ruled out of the rest of Sri Lanka series

Proteas captain Temba Bavuma has been ruled out of the rest of the Sri Lankan series, following an injury he picked up on Thursday, confirmed Cricket South Africa (CSA).

The Proteas will see the loss of their captain, Bavuma as a huge blow as he was begging to look good at the crease alongside Aiden Markran before he succumbed to injury against Sri Lanka.

The captain had come in to bat in the number three slot, with the dismissal of opening batsman Janneman Malan for 23 runs, bringing him to the crease to join Markram as the Proteas sought to chase down a hefty target of 301 set by the hosts in the first of three ODI’s in Sri Lanka.

Bavuma went for scans on Friday, with results coming back, forcing the CSA to confirm the end of his tour.

“Proteas captain, Temba Bavuma, has been ruled out of the remainder of the white ball series in Sri Lanka after a freak accident resulted in a fractured right thumb, said CSA in a statement.

Scans indicated a fracture and the captain will return to South Africa as soon as possible to consult a specialist.
