Public calls for car dealerships to reopen

Johannesburg -May 1 saw lockdown restriction lift to level 4 with a few restrictions eased and relaxed. Many people saw this as an opportunity to get back to their activities.

Though South Africa has moved to level 4, not all restrictions have been lifted and not all industries will be going back to work.

One particular industry that has not reopened is the motoring industry. People have called for car dealerships to reopen. Motoring writer, Lance Branquinho, wrote that reopening of the motoring is not just about selling cars, but about saving the country’s economy.

“The automotive sector is vitally important to South Africa. Both private and public transport in South Africa is almost exclusively by vehicle, instead of by rail. Even South Africa’s logistics network is powered by diesel bakkies and trucking, to a much more significant proportion, than diesel-electric trains.”
