MOSCOW- Russian president Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that he would be happy to invite North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and hailed US president Donald Trump summit with the leader.
Putin said the historic summit on Tuesday in Singapore, “without doubt just the first step towards a full-blown settlement”.
“Thanks to this meeting a possible negative scenario has been cast aside,” Putin said.
“Certainly it creates conditions for further forward movement and decreases general tensions around the Korean peninsula,” he added.
The meeting was an unprecedented moment when the leader of the most powerful democracy, shaking hands with third generation to leader of the most isolated country and dictatorial state, North Korea.
However the critics say the summit was more style than substance with Trump giving away more than Kim did. The meeting did produce document short on specifics about the key issue of Pyongyang’s atomic weapons.
Putin said he would be pleased to welcome Kim to Russia, he has suggested that the meeting during an economic forum in the east port city Vladivostok this September.
North Korea has never been invited Russia, but Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov became the first ever Russian official to meet Kim when he traveled to Pyongyang in late May.
