Singer R Kelly has been sentenced to 30 years in prison after being convicted on racketeering and sex trafficking charges in connection to recruiting women and children for sex.
His attorney was asking for 14 years for the 55-year-old musician citing his “traumatic upbringing”.
The victims told the judge about how years of abuse and exploitation by the singer “ruined their lives”. Kelly did not give a statement and his attorney said he’ll have a pending appeal.
The musician was convicted in September 2020 at the Brooklyn federal court after a six-week trial including two days of deliberations – the jury returned a verdict of guilty on all nine counts of the verdict sheet.
Early reports about sexual abuse involving the singer date as far back as the 1990s.
