R3.5 million stolen in a heist

There was a money transport vehicle armed robbery between Mthatha and Ngcobo on Monday Night. The heist consisted of a 15 armed gang, taking in R3.5 million and leaving behind R750 000.

The robbers reportedly distracted the vehicle, making it stray off the road, before shooting multiple times on it. They fled with millions and leaving behind a few thousand Rands. The gang continued to rob more people on the R61, including two security firm employees driving on the same road, taking their cell phones and firearms.

Leutenant-Colonel Mzukisi, spokesman of the Mthatha police declined to reveal exactly how much was stolen by the gang, or any information regarding the whole heist as it was too early. “They forced the car off the road and used grinders to cut through the back of the car before taking an undisclosed amount of money,” he explained. It is reported that nobody was killed or injured during the heist.

The vehicle belongs to the G4S Security, which was travelling to Mthatha after it has collected cash from other small towns like Cofimvaba, Cala and Ngcobo. Further reports on the case suggest that the robbers understood how the G4S Security cars operated, which raised suspicions.

An investigation about the robbery has been opened and more is still going to be reported on the ongoing case.
