SA sports commentator Dumile Mateza has died

Johannesburg – One of South Africa’s most prominent sports commentators Dumile Mateza has passed away at the age of 62.

Mateza had been sick for some before his untimely death on Tuesday.

The formidable sports commentator was born in the town of Kareedouw in the Eastern Cape. He became a hit as a sports commentator for the SABC. This was soon after he quit teaching in 1979, a career he took straight after finishing matric, without a teaching qualification.

His versatility and ability to commentate in different languages made him a legend very early in his broadcasting career. Mateza was able to deliver commentary in IsiXhosa, Afrikaans and English among other South African languages.

Before realising his sports commentary, Mateza was an IsiXhosa news reader for SABC.

He also served as a board member for Boxing South Africa (BSA), and he also served as Acting CEO for the South African National Boxing Control Commission (SANBCC)
