Cape Town- SASCOC has named a strong Commonwealth team including para-athlete squad.
The team including of 16 sport codes including disciplines of swimming, athletes and table tennis. The biggest names in the team are Caster Semeyna, Chad Le Clos, Cameroon van der Burgh, Akani Simbine, and the Rugby Sevens team which still needs to be named, expected by the end of February. SASCOC acting CEO Pateince Shikwambana wished the team the best, ” “I believe we have a strong team with established stars who have excelled exceptionally on the international arena”. The Commonwealth games will be hosted by Australia from the 4-15 of April 2018.
One of the biggest snubs was high jumper Khotso Mokoena who has suspected foul play from SASCOC accusing them of not informing all the athletes of the criteria to qualify. Wayde Van Niekerk was not part of the squad as he is injured. The biggest sport discipline in the team is aquatics with 28 athletes were included in the team.
The games are a great platform for emerging young stars and sport development, the final team was decided by a nine member SASCOC high performance commission which submitted the names to the organisation’s board.
