SADTU: Mpumalanga schools not ready to open

Mbombela – Schools in Mpumalanga cannot reopen next week. That is according to Kanyamazane residents who say many schools don’t have enough Personal Protective Equipment to make sure that teachers and pupils are protected.

The South African Teachers Union (SADTU) agrees that the schools are not ready to reopen, saying more has to be done to ensure the safety of pupils and teachers.

The union said it will be speaking to the Department of Basic Education to delay the opening of schools.

Masihambisane Higher Primary School is one of the schools which is not ready to reopen. The principal of the school says it is relying on the education department for help.

“When learners are coming I cannot deny them the right to learn,” said Vusi Lukhele.

Residents in the township say schools shouldn’t reopen until all safety measures are in place.
