Saftu calls for basic income grant

Johannesburg – The South African Federation of Trade Union is calling for an R1,500 monthly grant.

The grant would be aimed at unemployed South Africans over the age of 18.

General Secretary Zwelinzima Vavi, who was speaking at an event ahead of the Medium Term Budget Policy Statement, said that the basic income grant will boost the economy, create demand for products and services and in turn create jobs.

Income support grants and the public sector wage bill are two of the major spending pressures weighing on Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana ahead of his maiden budget speech on Thursday.
