Same-sex marriage bill a step closer to becoming law

JOHANNESBURG – A bill aimed at forcing Home Affairs officers to officiate same-sex marriages is a step closer to becoming law.

The National Assembly on Thursday approved the Civil Union Amendment Bill.

If the bill signed into law, it will make it mandatory  for marriage officers working for the State to marry same-sex couples despite their beliefs, or if they reject gay marriage.

It was passed with the support by majority of parties, it now requires the approval of the NCOP as well as the president.

Previously, nearly 88 percent of marriage officers working for Home Affairs were exempt from marrying same-sex couples.

The department has two years to train officers before the bill and after if the bill is signed into law.
