PRETORIA – The Social Development Department on Wednesday gave the South African Post Office (SAPO) an offer take over payment of social grants from Cash Paymaster Services.
This comes amid warnings of another potential grants payment crisis with the highest degree of causing alarm and mayhem across South Africa.
Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini says this will not only improve the efficiency of grant payments but will also assist SAPO to revive some of its closed outlets countrywide, largely in rural areas.
“This can assist SAPO to revive some of its closed outlets especially in the rural areas and townships and is in line with the department’s commitment in promoting government-to-government partnership as outlined in the report to the Constitutional Court.” the department said in a statement.
Dlamini says it is imperative for SAPO to consider the offer indicating that it’s the only solution to improve grant payment systems countrywide.
In a statement, department applauded the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) for its efforts in finding the best solutions for the payment of grants.
Dlamini indicated that SAPO could play a big role in ensuring that grant payment deadlines are met given the number of its outlets countrywide.
The South African Post Office is yet to respond to the offer.
