JOHANNESBURG – Police say a key witness, a taxi driver in Dobsonville, was shot dead in the early hours of Monday before he was set to testify against a friend who is accused of murdering his girlfriend.
In a statement, police spokesperson Captain Mpande Khoza confirmed that it was a second murder connected to the high court case, adding that the investigative officer who was working on the case was also murdered.
According to Khoza, the deceased was a key witness in the Johannesburg High Court case and believes his murder was a ‘hit’ to defeat the ends of justice.
“The deceased witnessed his best friend murdering his girlfriend in 2009. The case was taken to court but the court refuses to prosecute due to insufficient evidence. The investigating officer recollected the outstanding evidence and the case was taken back to court,” said Khoza.
“Earlier before,” added Khoza, “When it was clear that the accused was nailed on the case, he hired people to kill the investigating officer. The investigating officer was then murdered. Investigation revealed that the accused hired hitmen to kill the police officer.”
Khoza confirmed that the accused was sentenced to 22-years imprisonment in September this year for the murder of the investigative officer and the case for his girlfriend’s murder is still pending.
