Johannesburg Sibanye-Stillwater has temporarily halted work at three gold mines after workers embarked on a strike over wages Wednesday night.
The company said a prolonged strike could threaten the outlook for the mines and force further restructuring.
Mineworkers affiliated to unions AMCU and the NUM downed tools demanding R1,000 a month increase over three years.
Sibanye is offering R700 for Category 4 to 8 workers, saying it cannot offer more.
