South Africa: Award winning actor Desmond Dube joins the King Kong cast

South African award winning actor Desmond Dube will join the cast of the Fugard Theatre musical King Kong play. He will be playing the central role of Pop, a role was played by Sne Dladla. The play will stage from the 2nd of January.

Dube told John Maytham from a radio station Cape Talk that he’s looking forward to playing the Pop role. He also went on to say Sne Dladla really mastered the role, but what’s important right now is being able to make a character your very own.

“Sne Dladla was fantastic and he told the story the way Sne Dladla would tell the story,” Desmond told the Cape Talk listeners.

Dube also told the listeners that he knows a few people who lived in Sophiatown around the time, this play is based on. He also went on to say that their experiences will help him with is role.

“It has challenges but I think it’s a happy challenge – it doesn’t necessarily pay today’s bills but there’s a happiness that comes with being on stage. We work for applause to be honest.”

King Kong is currently on at the Fugard Theatre in Cape Town until 2 February 2018
