Stolen military weapons recovered in the East Rand

Johannesburg – Two military officials and an employee of the Department of Education, who’s currently out on bail for another crime, have been linked and arrested for robbing the Lyttleton Military Base.

A joint investigation between the military police and the Hawks led to the arrest of Lance Corporal Sidwel Babini Tyawana, 36 and Sapper Tumelo Christian Mangale, 28.

The stolen objects included 18 R4 rifles and 3 pistols from the South African Army Engineering Formation, Tek base.

The suspects have since appeared before the court of a senior military judge and were granted bail as of 22 April 2020. The Hawks’Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said the Hawks learnt that some of the firearms were hidden whilst others were sold in the East Rand area.13 of the stolen rifles and 1 pistol was recovered in Daveyton.
