Thiem sends Djokovic out of Monte Carlo

MONTE CARLO-  Fifth seed Dominic Thiem came from behind win to knock out Novak Djokovic in the Monte Carlo fourth round clash to face Rafael Nadal in the quarter-final clash.

Thiem won the game in three sets, after losing first set in the opening tie break, 6-7 (2), 6-2, 6-3.

Djokovic has not reached the last eight of a tournament since last year’s Wimbledon and has since struggled with a long-term elbow injury that has seen poor performances from the star.

Thiem made a clinching breakthrough in the final set with a powerful breakthrough with his backhand down the line.

He finished the match with his second match point.

His next opponent will be World Number one Rafael Nadal, who comfortably won 6-3, 6-2 against Russia’s Karen Khachanov.

Nadal, the clay king is on track to win his 11 consecutive Monte Carlo title.
