Johannesburg – Comedian Trevor Noah stopped by US talk show Good Morning America to chat about his latest Netflix special, Son of Patricia, his close bond with Will Smith and how Lupita Nyong’o was cast to play his mother in the movie about his life.
Going on a press tour for his latest comedy special, Noah said he has formed friendships with celebrities since he took over The Daily Show in late 2016.
“Will Smith has been someone who’s become a friend and a mentor in life. I grew up watching him and loving him,” Trevor told hosts Michael Strahan and Sara Haines, joking that he calls Will up every now again just to make sure that it’s really him.
Trevor also spoke about why Lupita Nyong’o was chosen to play his mother, in his biopic movie, Born A Crime.
“Lupita was on the set of Black Panther. She was reading my book, which I didn’t even know she had, and then she calls me and she goes: ‘Hey Trevor, it’s Lupita’. I said: ‘Hey Lupita, how you doing?’ And then she goes: ‘I want to be your mom’.”
Lupita explained how she loved his book so much that she had offered to play his mother in the movie, “I was like: ‘But there is no movie’. She’s like: ‘There is now’,” he added.
