TRUMP TOLD APPLE CEO IPHONES WILL BE SPARED FROM CHINA TARIFFS – NYT

WASHINGTON- New York Times (NYT) has reported on Monday that US president Donald Trump told Apple Inc CEO Tim Cooks that the US government will not levy tariffs on iPhones assembled in China according to sources close to the issue.

The NYT report said that Cook traveled to Washington in May to warn Trump of the potentially damaging effects of Trump’s trade policies on Apple in China but did not say when Trump made the commitment to Cook. Apple and the White House were not immediately available for comment.

In April a proposed list of tariffs did mostly exclude consumer electronics. But Trump last week announced a revised list that announced $50 billion taiffs on Chinese products, including products such as chips and many feared that it would affect US technology sector.
