Two mineworkers trapped underground at Sibanye’s Ikamva Shaft

JOHANNESBURG – Sibanye-Stillwater on Wednesday said two workers have been trapped underground at its Kloof Ikamva Shaft, South of Johannesburg, Gauteng, following a seismic incident in the early hours of Wednesday.

“Yes we can confirm that two of our workers are unaccounted for at Ikamva. This incident happened around 01h30 this morning and was a result of a seismic event, an earthquake, nearby,” said Sibanye investor relations manager, James Wellsted.

“Obviously we are trying to get to them and we will release an update as soon as we have more information.”

The Department of Mineral Resources also confirmed on its social media page that it has received an accident notification from Sibanye-Stillwater’s Ikamva Shaft following seismic activity.

“Two workers trapped underground. The department’s inspectors are on site assisting with the rescue operation.” The department said.
