Sydney – Two female couples got married in Australia’s first same-sex weddings under the new law allowing same sex couples to marry.
People have been expecting January 9th to be the first possible date for same-sex couples to get married. The law was said to apply after 4 weeks. On Saturday in Sydney and Melbourne got married after they were granted permission to waive the notice period.
The first couple Lauren Price, 31, and Amy Laker, 29, exchanged vows in Sydney, this is due to the fact that their families had to travel all the way from Wales to UK to attend their wedding.
The second couple Amy and Elise McDonald was given an exception to get married in Melbourne since their families had to fly in from overseas.
Another couple Anne Sedgwick and Lyn Hawkins that has been together for 40 years now, were due to marry on Sunday. They were given special consideration because 85 year old Hawkins is in the final stages of her battle against ovarian cancer.
“Anne has been very supportive through all this and marrying her, it’s Anne’s way of saying ‘let’s finally do this,” Hawkins said.
