CAPE TOWN- New Police Minister Bheki Cele has revealed that five suspects who had given confessions to the events of the Ngcobo massacre, admitted the plan was to rob a Capitec Bank across from the police station.
On Wednesday Cele presented his first statement as police minister relating to the killing of five officers and a former solider at the police station in Ngcobo.
He said, “All the suspects who were arrested were questioned, and it transpired that only five of the suspects of the 37 arrested were involved.”
Th eight suspects identified by the police, viewed the police station as a way to get arms for their plan robbery.
“The confession made by the above-mentioned suspects was that a group of eight individuals conspired to rob the Capitec Bank ATM across from the police station,” Cele said.
He paid homage to the officers killed, “We want to make it very clear that SAPS is not an undertaker company. We resist burying our members,” he said.
Cele also warned, “I want to issue a strong warning. Any military engagement by the thugs engaging SAPS, there [will be] one side who gets buried after the engagement, and that side will not be the South African Police Service.”
