
SAN FRANCISCO- A US federal judge ruled on Monday that Facebook Inc must face a class action lawsuit alleging that the social network unlawfully used a facial recognition process on photos without user permission.
The ruling adds to the mounting pressure and woes against Facebook for the past coupe of weeks, since it was disclosed that personal information of their users was shared by political consultancy firm Cambridge Analytic.
James Donato US district attorney ruled in San Francisco federal court that a class action was the most appropriate and effective way to resolve the dispute over facial templates.
Facebook responded saying they are reviewing the judge decision, “We continue to believe the case has no merit and will defend ourselves vigorously.”
In 2015 Facebook users filed a complaint in the state of Illinois that a privacy of biometric information has been breached.
In 2011 Facebook created facial recognition algorithms were they stored data of Facebook users in Illinois, they used the feature “Tag Suggestions,” it suggests people to tag after a Facebook user uploads a photo.
