LAS VEGAS – Miss South Africa 2017 Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, was on Sunday night crowned Miss Universe live from the AXIS at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.

The 22-year-old from Sedgefield in the Western Cape, who was full of smiles as she bagged the crown in a star-studded ceremony in Las Vegas, dedicated her crown to South Africa.

“[South] Africa, I love you. Thank you for everything. I am Miss Universe and this is for you,” she said in a delightful smile.

She also posted on her twitter account to thank all South Africans who have been supporting her from day one, “South Africa, thank you for support and love throughout my #MissUniverse journey. I may be the new Miss Universe but I will always be your Miss South Africa – we did it!”

She also dedicated her crown to her disabled half-sister whom she says was among her great inspirations throughout her career.

Nel-Peters beat Miss Colombia Laura Gonzalez (22) who became the first runner-up and Miss Jamaica Davina Bennet (21) who became the second runner-up.

The 22-year old becomes only the second South African to win the crown in nearly four decades after Margaret Gardiner last won the crown in 1978.

Nel-Peters recently earned a business management degree from North-West University.
