HAWAII- Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano erupted on Thursday, 3 May, sending lava shooting into the air in a residential neighbourhood and prompting mandatory evacuation orders for nearby homes.
The Hawaiian County Civil Defense Agency did close the area to visitors and ordered that private tour companies to stop bringing people into the region.
The County said the steam and lava spurted out into the sky from a crack in a road. Aerial drone footage showed a line of lava snaking through a forest.
Resident in the area Jeremiah Osuna told Honolulu television station KHON said, “It sounded like if you were to put a bunch of rocks into a dryer and turn it on as high as you could. You could just smell sulfur and burning trees and underbrush and stuff.”
