JOHANNESBURG- Varsity Cup game was fulled with controversy on Monday night, the game between the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) Madibaz and Maties in Port Elizabeth after South African Students Congress (Sasco) students invaded the pitch, a protest action from Sasco students calling for transformation in the sport.
The Sasco students invaded the pitch and tried to enter the VIP area in the stands calling it to be removed.
In reaction to this incident, NMMU Sasco’s Facebook page, the organization said they are disappointed in the manner that university management handled the situation.
It said, “We also expect no VIP sections this time around, we want all those who claim to be on our side to ch.me and join us in singing and supporting the team.”
“The South African Students Congress is disappointed by the arrogant behavior in which the director of Sport handled the situation. We believe that she could have done a better job than adding more security and instructing them to assault students.”
The students organisation has added they are engaging with all parties and stakeholders to improve transformation all in departments.
“The call from students was a fair and a simple one and it needed no security but constructive engagements. As the organization we will continue on engaging all relevant stakeholders with regards to the transformation of all departments including the sports department. We will instruct all our deployees in the SRC to attend the MANCO on the 14-March-2018 and raise all these issues.”
Police have arrived at NMU after chaos erupted at the match between Madibaz and Maties. According to reports from the scene, SASCO students are allegedly protesting against the lack of transformation in sports. The game has been cancelled.
