CAPE TOWN- Main opposition party in the Western Cape African National Congress (ANC) officials have said the  newly-elected vice-chancellor Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng is the right person to ensure the University of Cape Town (UCT) makes policy changes while retaining its position as a leading university on the continent.

It was announced on Saturday that UCT council had appointed Phakeng as their new Vice Chancellor at the university, after wide speculation on social media confirming the news.

Provincial ANC spokesperson, Yonela Diko, said that Professor Phakeng has  shown a clear understanding of what is at the core of the campus and the university challenges.

She said, “We are therefore confident that once at the helm of the university she will ensure that the university continues to rise is global rankings, she will ensure that the quality of professors and researchers at the university continue to improve and that its lecturers continue to be world-class.”

Professor Phakeng was humbled by the appointment, she said, “I look forward to working with the DVCs, the EDs who are here and I’m committed to the vision that was approved by senate and council last year to ensure that UCT is inclusive, engaged and unapologetically African.”
