Yonda Thomas lands role as Madiba

Johannesburg – One of South Africa’s talented and popular actors, Yonda Thomas who is well known for his role in Fallen has landed a role as Nelson Mandela.

Yonda has always dreamed of playing a role on one of the country’s struggle icons, this is a dream come true for him. He also went on to say that this is not only a big role for him, but it is one of the toughest role he has ever landed. He also went on to say that he still dreams of playing Steve Biko one day.

This 31-year-old has also graced our small screens with his roles on saint and sinners, end game and isidingo.

“I was extremely happy when I received the news that I will be playing the role of Nelson Mandela when he was young,” he says of the role.

Yonda also admits that preparing for this role was never easy, but he loved the challenge. He had to change his voice so that it sounds the same as Mandela’s voice. He also did his research on Mandela’s childhood.

“I read the book [The Long Walk to Freedom] and tried to find Ubuntu because I wanted to connect with him. So from there [on] I decided not to play Utata or the image that we know of him, but rather play the young man from the Eastern Cape,” he says
