Zambian government slams ‘burden’ women who drink too much

Johannesburg – Zambia’s chief government spokesperson Dora Siliya said Zambian women are becoming a burden to government because evidence has shown that 42 percent of them drink beer excessively.

The Zambian Observer reported that Siliya said these remarks at her office on Thursday after a survey by the World Health Organisation (WHO) exposed thar Zambian women are at the top of the list as the highest alcohol consumers in the world

Siliya who is known to be outspoken said women needed to understand that alcohol interfered with their ability to meet their responsibilities.

In response to this report of excessive abuse of alcohol, the Zambian cabinet agreed to implement an anti-alcohol policy preventing drunks from getting further wasted.

Spokeswoman for the government did not give detail on what the policy involved, nor did she make a comment on whether Zambian men also had drinking issues.
