South African DJ and producer J-Smash, born Uhone Luvhengo, has marked the first anniversary of his mother’s passing with a deeply personal and emotional tribute shared on Instagram.
“A year ago, on this same day, my life changed forever. This was the day I lost my mom,” he wrote. He recalled a moment that preceded the tragic news, describing how his nose began bleeding unexpectedly while he was in the shower—something he had not experienced since childhood. “Something in me knew something was wrong before the phone rang. A few hours later, the call came, and just like that, you were gone.”
He reflected on the overwhelming shock and grief that followed. “I didn’t accept it then. I don’t think I could. I simply survived. The pain this day brings is beyond words. December has never been the same, and this past year has been one long battle.”
J-Smash went on to honour his mother’s strength and resilience, acknowledging the sacrifices she made throughout her life. “A year later, I find myself asking how she managed to do everything she did. Without her presence, I now see how much she carried. I watched her stay strong even when she was weak. I watched her fight until her final days, and that strength still lives within me.”
He also shared how her presence continues to linger in quiet moments. “Sometimes I still hear her calling my name—‘UHONE.’ Sometimes I hear her laughter, and for a brief moment, it feels like she’s still here. Then reality sets in, and my heart has to relearn the truth all over again.”
Reflecting on the lessons she left behind, J-Smash described the past year as a journey of growth through pain. “Being here a year later feels like being a warrior who never asked for war, but I now understand that I was being prepared all along.”
He added, “As her son, I was raised to stand like a king, to protect those I love, and to move through life with purpose and strength. I carry her lessons and her spirit into everything I do.”
He concluded the tribute with a heartfelt message: “This day brings so much pain. Mom, I love you more than words could ever hold.”
