South Africa appear to be facing a daunting challenge ahead of the fourth T20 International against India in Lucknow on Wednesday, with recent performances suggesting the odds are firmly stacked against them.
The T20I series has so far produced three largely one-sided contests. India dominated the opening match, skittling the Proteas for a paltry 74 to register a commanding 101-run victory. South Africa responded emphatically in the second encounter, posting an imposing 213 and securing a 51-run win to level the series.
However, momentum swung back decisively in India’s favour in the third T20I on Sunday. After South Africa struggled to reach 117, the hosts cruised to a comfortable seven-wicket victory with more than four overs remaining. India now lead the five-match series 2–1 and can seal the contest with another win in the fourth match.
Contrasting Paths Since the World Cup Final
It is no coincidence that India and South Africa were finalists at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in June 2024. While India emerged as champions and have continued to strengthen as a unit, South Africa’s trajectory since that final has been far less encouraging.
Since the World Cup, the Proteas have played eight T20I series, managing to win only one. Their recent form is equally concerning, with just a single victory in their last five T20I outings.
Although South Africa have welcomed back experienced campaigners David Miller and Anrich Nortje—who has battled injuries in recent seasons—the absence of Heinrich Klaasen remains a significant blow. Widely regarded as one of the most destructive T20 batters in world cricket, Klaasen’s retirement from international duty has left a substantial void in the Proteas’ middle order.
Twenty-two-year-old Dewald Brevis has been earmarked as Klaasen’s successor, but his returns in the current series—scores of 22, 14, and 2—highlight the challenge of filling such big shoes.
All indicators point towards another difficult outing for South Africa in Lucknow. Based on current form and statistical trends, a Proteas victory would come as a major surprise.
