Scotts Maphuma Tops Google’s 2025 List of Most-Searched Artists in South Africa

Scotts Maphuma has emerged as the most-searched artist in South Africa for 2025, according to Google’s Year in Search report. The year proved to be a defining one for the amapiano star, celebrated for chart-topping hits such as “Shayi’Moto”, but also marked by public controversy that kept him firmly in the spotlight.

A series of viral videos and widely publicised incidents sparked intense debate about his behaviour toward fans and the potential impact on his career. Many fans expressed disappointment and outrage, accusing the artist of being disrespectful.

In early 2025, Maphuma addressed the growing scrutiny on social media, opening up about the pressures of fame. He shared his frustration, saying he felt constantly judged for not always being in the mood to take photos or interact with fans. “I can’t even go to the mall without being asked for a picture,” he revealed, highlighting the difficulty of maintaining a normal life under constant public attention.

However, his remarks—especially after videos circulated that appeared to show him dismissing fans—triggered significant backlash. The situation worsened as many labeled him “rude” on social media.

In an effort to mend relationships with his supporters, the artist issued a series of public apologies. Several well-known musicians also came out in support of the rising star during this challenging period.

Winnie Khumalo Ranks Second

The late musician Winnie Khumalo placed second on the list of South Africa’s most-searched artists in 2025. Best known for her hit song “Live My Life”, Khumalo passed away in January at the age of 51 following a short illness. She also tops the list of the most-searched celebrity losses of 2025.

Naledi Aphiwe Takes Third Spot

Rising star Naledi Aphiwe secured the third position, proving she is far more than a viral sensation as she continues to build a solid career in the local music industry.

Naledi first gained national attention while she was still a learner at Khethokuhle Secondary School, after her voice was sampled on the song “Shooter”, featured on Chris Brown’s 2023 album, 11:11. Since then, she has passed matric, met Chris Brown, won major awards, and secured collaborations once thought to be beyond reach—cementing her place as one of South Africa’s most promising young talents.
