South Africa has reiterated its strong commitment to the principles of the United Nations Charter, urging all nations to prioritize peaceful dialogue as tensions involving Iran continue to intensify in the Middle East.
Addressing delegates at the UN Country Team Annual Retreat in Pretoria, Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Alvin Botes emphasized the enduring relevance of the United Nations framework as the foundation of global governance. He stressed that disputes between nations must be resolved through recognized diplomatic mechanisms such as negotiation, mediation, arbitration, and judicial processes.
Botes underscored that military approaches alone cannot deliver sustainable peace, cautioning against unilateral interventions that sidestep international law and established multilateral systems.
Raising concerns over the escalating geopolitical situation in the Middle East, he warned that increasing hostilities—including actions targeting Iran—pose serious risks not only to regional stability but also to the global economy. He highlighted potential disruptions to energy markets, international shipping routes, and fragile diplomatic relations.
Reinforcing the importance of collective global action, Botes described multilateralism as a critical strategic tool, particularly for nations in the Global South. He noted that international law remains essential in protecting sovereign equality and ensuring justice across nations.
He further called for a more inclusive and responsive multilateral system, urging global institutions to evolve beyond procedural formalities and better address the developmental priorities of emerging economies.
South Africa has consistently maintained a firm and critical stance regarding the growing conflict in the Middle East, particularly in relation to Israel and the United States. The government has openly condemned military strikes on Iranian territory, including attacks on defense and nuclear-related infrastructure, stating that such actions undermine international legal norms and heighten regional instability.
In its recent diplomatic communications, Pretoria has called on all parties to exercise restraint and resolve disputes through peaceful engagement under the framework of the United Nations. Officials have also warned that continued escalation could expand the conflict, leading to severe humanitarian consequences and broader global security challenges.
South Africa continues to advocate for adherence to international law, reinforcing its position through legal avenues such as its ongoing case at the International Court of Justice. The country maintains that all actors involved must respect legal obligations, avoid targeting civilians, and protect critical infrastructure to prevent further deterioration of the situation.
